What is force? |
-A force is a push or a pull -A force is anything which has a tendency either to impart mation to a body at rest or to change or destroy the uniformity of the motion of a moving body (lb) |
What is pressure? |
-Pressure is force per unit area. -The measured intensity of a force at a contact surface. (lb/in2) |
What is work? |
A displacement of the point of application in the direction of the force. (ftlb) |
What is energy? |
Energy is the ability to do work. |
What are the two fundamental forms of energy? |
-Kinetic (Energy in motion) -Potential (Fixed or stored energy) |
What is Power? |
Power is the rate of doing work (Work over time ftlb/min) |
What is a Horsepower? |
Horsepower is the rate of doing work at 33000ftlb/min. |
Convert farenheit to centigrade |
Tc=5/9(Tf-32) |
Convert centigrade to farenheit |
Tf=9/5Tc+32 |
What is a BTU? |
A BTU is the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree farenheit. |
What is specific heat? |
Specific Heat is the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of 1 pound of a substance 1 degree farenheit.
(Specific heat is relative to water. Water has a specific heat of 1) |
What are the three methods of heat transfer? |
-Conduction -Convection -Radiation |
What is conduction? |
Conduction is transfer of heat through the molecules of a substance. |
What is convection? |
Transfer of heat by the flow of current within a fluid body. |
What is radiation? |
Transfer of heat from one body to another by wave motion. |
What is thermal conductance? |
Ease or readiness a substance conducts heat. (moht) |
What is thermal resistance? |
Opposition to which a material offers to heat flow. (thom) |
What is latent heat? |
Latent heat is the heat required to change the state of a substance. |
What is the latent heat of steam? |
Latent heat of steam is 970.4BTU at atmospheric pressure and 212F. |
What is humidity? |
Humidity is used to describe the condition of air which contains water vapor. |
What are the two ways humidity is expressed? |
-Absolute -Relative |
What is absolute humidity? |
Absolute humidity is the total weight of water suspended in a volume of air. |
What is relative humidity? |
Relative humidity is the ratio between the weight of water suspended in a volume of air and the weight of the same volume at saturation conditions. |
How is humidity measured? |
By hygrometer. Most common is the sling psychrometer which uses wet and dry bulb thermometer readings. |
What is dew point? |
Dew point is the temperature at which the water vapor in a sample of air at constant barometric pressure condenses into liquid water at the same rate it evaporates. |
What is critical temperature? |
Critical temperature is the temperature at which a substance can not exist as a liquid. |
What is the critical temperature of water? |
Critical temperature of water is 706.1F |
What is critical pressure? |
Critical pressure is the lowest pressure a substance can exist as a liquid at critical temperature. |
What is the critical pressure of water? |
The critical pressure of water is 3200psi. |
At what temperature does water reach it's maximum density? |
39F |
What is melting or fusion? |
Process by which a substance is changed from a solid to a liquid through the application of heat. |
What is solidifying or freezing? |
Process by which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid by the removal of heat. |
What is a vapor? |
Any substance in a gaseous state which does not come close to following any general gas law. |
What is temperature? |
Temperature is the measurement of the intensity of heat. |
