-threat to or actual aggressive physical contact
-threat to or destruct City or personal property
-harassing/threatening phone calls, emails, faxes
-possession, use, brandishing a weapon
-stalking
-veiled threats of harm, intimidation
Common Causes of WV
-abusive relationships
-dissatisfied customers
-mental illness
-disgruntled former or current employee
Definition of Domestic Violence
ABUSE committed against an adult or emancipated minor
What is ABUSE?
-intentional/reckless cause or attempt to cause bodily injury
-sexual assault
-threatening behavior or harassment
-stalking
-annoying contact w/ someone the abuser has or had a relationship.
What is the Supervisor to do if an employee comes to him/her asking for help?
-employees encouraged to seek help
-Supe may refer to EAP, County DA, SJPD or Family Violence Center
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES FOR EMPLOYEE
-ensure personal safety
-do not take unnecessary risks or confront assailant
-call 911 ( 111 from City phone)
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES FOR DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR (FIRE CHIEF-FC)
-Immediate contact with OER to coordinate actions, resources
-direct Staff to implement basic safety measures (lock doors, etc.)
-OER to coordinate with PD & FD for security & medical needs
-coordinate with OER for leave needs of impacted employees
-exercise authority by granting leave needs when OER not available
Non-Emergency Procedures for Employee
-inform supervisor, Fire Chief or OER
-keep record of incident
-if complaint made directly to OER, response will be coordinated with FD.
Non-mergency procedures for Supervisor
-Inform FC through Chain
-Document all pertinent info
-submit report to FC within 24 hours of first verbal report
-Copy of report to OER
-all info is confidential
Non-emergency procedures for FC
-receive and review report
-contact OER to see if can resolve at FD level & coordinate support.
-prepare final report to OER with recommendations to solve and/or monitor situation.
When you encounter a violent person, you should...
-stay calm & listen w/ courtesy patience
-maintain eye contact
-move and speak slowly
-be empathetic, acknowledge feelings
-3'-6' distance between both
-maintain a clear exit path
-use delay tactics to calm person
-break bigger problems into bigger ones
When you encounter a violent person, you should NOT.....
-take sides or agree with their distortions
-blow off or ignore the person
-use challenging body language
-minimize the situation
-make promises you can't keep
