Adaptive Immunity |
A mechanism that provides the ability for the immune system to react to novel (new) infectious agents and prepare for future encounters with those agents - this involves B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes. |
Compliment System |
The complement system is a part of the immune system that helps or complements the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear pathogens from an organism. It is part of the innate immune system, which is not adaptable and does not change over thecourse of an individual's lifetime. |
Leukocytes |
Leukocytes-leukocytes circulate through the body between the organs and NODES by means of the lymphatic vessels. A Type of white blood cell |
Antigen |
A foreign substance that invades the body is called an antigen. |
Phagocytes |
Phagocytes are cell that destroy invading organisms |
b - Lymphocytes |
B lymphocytes recognize specific antigens and sending defenses to lock onto them. |
Innate Immunity |
Non-specific immunity (skin, oils on skin, mucous membranes, stomach acid, etc.) that generally respond to things that appear "bad." Don't remember the pathogens they responded to before and don't distinguish between the pathogens they're responding to. |
Passive Immunity |
Short term immunity that is transferred from another person. |
Primary Defense |
defenses that are the first ones to respond to an external attack ie) skin and mucous membranes |
Secondary Defense |
Non - specific immunity an example is phagocytes |
t- lymphocytes |
T lymphocytes kill the invading organism after it has been notified to by the B lymphocytes can also signal phagocytes |
Antibody |
Antibodies are specialized proteins that lock onto specific antigens. Antibodies and antigens fit together like a key and lock. |
