Stage one : no country, birth rate and death rate high, due to high infant mortality; stage two: high birth rate rapidly decreasing death rate, due to medicine, water supply, food production; stage three: birth rate falls rapidly death rate still decreasing, due to family planning, industrialisation and mechanisation, more desire for material possessions, women follow their careers; stage four: both rates remain low, steady population; stage five: Italy and Germany, birth rate decreases and death rate increases.
