What is Political Intolerance? |
It's refusing to accept other people/countries political beliefs and treating them differently because of this. |

It was the fear that the Communism would spread to the USA and eventually take over. |

There was a wave of disturbance across America. 400,000 American workers went on strike and bombs were set. |

The police went on strike allowing thieves to roam the city, which made the people see it as a dangerous sign. |

They were deported from USA. |

Who were Sacco and Vanzetti? |
They were victims of the Red Scare because they were anarchists. (They believed in removing all forms of government/law) |

They were accused of an armed robbery and murder. |

What did their trial turn into? |
A trial of their radical ideas instead of a trial for murder. |

Although Vanzetti is not to blame for the murder, he is still blamed for being an enemy of their institution. |

It's refusing to accept other people because of their religious beliefs. |

Why did people oppose Darwin's theory of evolution? |
People took the story of God creating the world in 7 days literally as they were very religious. Darwin's theory opposed their belief. |

How did people react? |
Fundamentalist Christians set up the Anti-Evolution League in 1924 in order to try and ban the teaching of Evolution. |

Yes in several states in the 'Bible Belt' of the Mid-West. |

He was a biology teacher who taught evolution. |

It's refusing to accept other people because of their race. |

What discrimination did Black Americans suffer? |
They couldn't vote, had controlled freedom, suffered poverty and they were denied access to good jobs and education. |

Ku Klux Klan |

Who were they and what did they want? |
They were a white supremacy movement, who wanted white people to be in charge and at the top of everything. |

What did they do? |
They used violence to punish Black Americans such as burning houses and lynching. |

Where were they the strongest? |
In the South of America because there was a high population of Black people. |

What improved for Black Americans in the North? |
They had a better chance of getting a good job and education. There was an university for black people and they were able to set up businesses. New York and Chicago had a small, growing black middle class. Some black Americans were able to emigrate back to Africa. |

What were the problems? |
In New York black people lived in cheaper houses, but paid higher rent. They had poorer education and health services. Middle-class black Americans blamed new black people. |
