Simile

Definition: A comparison made with "as", "like", or "than".



Example: The water well was as dry as a bone.

Metaphor

Definition: A comparison that is made directly. (without using like, as, or than.)



Example: Tris was the black sheep of the family.

Personification

Definition: When a writer describes an abstraction, a thing, or a nonhuman form as if it were a person.



Example: The cacti saluted any living breathing thing brave enough to travel the barren land.

Idiom

Definition: A phrase that isn't meant to be taken literally; it's interpreted figuratively.



Example: Emma was known for having a whole bag of tricks to get her out of class.

Hyperbole

Definition: A figure of speech that includes a striking exaggeration.



Example: Sam said "I will absolutely die if he asks me to dance! Like, pass out on the floor dead."

Alliteration:

Definition: The repetition of consonant sounds in a series of words within a phrase or verse line.



Example: The hummingbirds hovered in heavenly harmony.

Onomatopoeia

Definition: A figure of speech in which the sound of the word imitates the object it's describing.



Example: The buzzing bees went happily along from flower to flower.

Internal Rhyme

Definition: A poetic device which can be defined as metrical lines in which its middle words and its end words rhymes with each other.



Example: Double, double toil and trouble


Cauldron burn and bubble.

Rhyme Scheme

Definition: The ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse.



Example: Underneath the crystal clear sky


And the frozen barren ground beneath


A horse's terrified cry


As a coyote grounds it's teeth.


Meter

Definition: The rhythmical pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in verse; beat (there are multiple types of meter)



Example: Three blind mice, three blind mice, see how they run, see how they run, they all ran up to the farmer's wife, who cut off their tails with a carving knife, have you ever seen such a sight in your life as three blind mice.

Capital Letters

Definition: The form of an alphabetical letter used to begin a sentence or proper noun; an uppercase letter, in contrast to lower case. Normally in poetry the first letter of each line is capitalized, disregarding traditional grammar rules.



Example:


A gentle breeze


And a gentle spring


Ebb onward


Without a care


Not realizing the troubles


Of the passing days.


Line Length

Definition: The use of varying lengths in lines of poetry to help enhance and create more meaning. The line length will effect the sound and rhythm of the poem.



Example:


The fairy's wings


Unfolded dull


And dreary


Like a moth.

Dull and dreary, like a moth.

Word Position:

Definition: The way in which the words in the poem are placed to help create and enhance meaning and add a visual effect. It shows the relationship between words and ideas.
