Rhythm is a poem's pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

Meter

The meter of a poem is its rhythmical pattern. Meter is measured in feet or units.

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is the use of words that sound like the sounds they describe

Metaphor

Metaphors are implied comparisons between two objects omitting the words like or as.

Imagery is the use of words to paint a picture that allows a creative image in the reader's mind.

Punctuation in Poetry

Pause only where there is puctuation telling you to do so (period, comma, semicolon, exclamation, question, etc...) not at the end of every single line.

Iambic Pentameter

An Iambic Pentameter is the unstressed-stressed rhythm repeated five times.

Hyperbole

A Hyperbole is an exaggeration.

Concrete poem

Poetry in which the meaning or effect is conveyed partly or wholly by visual means, using patterns of words or letters and other typographical devices

Haiku

A Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five. Traditionally evoking images of the natural world.

Narrative poem

Narrative poetry is a form of poetry that tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters as well.

Lyric Poem

Poems that have a musical rhythm , and their topics often explore romantic feelings and other strong emotions.

Shakesperean Sonnet

This is a fourteen line poem that follows a specified rhyme scheme. The Shakespearean sonnet contains four stanzas ( first three stanzas are quatrain and the last stanza is a couplet, fourteen lines in total.) Many sonnets are written about love. It has a rhyme scheme of ABABCDCEFEGG.

Petrarchan Sonnet

This type of sonnet has two stanzas, one octave and one sestet ( 14 lines in total.) Poets usually use Iambic Pentameter for both forms of sonnets. It has a rhyme scheme of ABBAABBA CDECDE.

Elegy

A poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead.
