Plate tectonics
The theory that the Earth's lithosphere is divided into teconic plates that move around on top of the Asthenosphere.
Convergent Boundary
When two tectonic plates collide.
Divergent Boundary
When two tectonic plates seperate.
Transform Boundary
When two tectonic plates slide past eachother horizontally.
What does Ridge Push cause?
Ridge push causes the oceanic lithosphere to slide downhill under the force of gravity.
Whar does Slab Pull cause/do?
The edge of the tectonic plate that contains oceanic lithosphere sinks and pulls the rest of the tectonic plate with it.
What does Convection cause?
Convection causes the oceanic lithosphere to move sideways and away from the mid-ocean ridge.
A Subduction Zone is . . .
When a plate with oceanic crust collides with a plate with continental crust.
What occurs at a convergent boundary between two continental plates?
Mountains. Continental crust pushes upward creating mountains.
What occurs at a convergent boundary between two oceanic plates?
Trench
What occurs at a convergent boundary between an oceanic plate and a continental plate?
Volcanoes
What occurs at transform boundaries?
Earthquakes.
What occurs at a divergent boundary between two oceanic plates?
Mid-Ocean ridges
Name an example of where you can go in the U.S and see a tranform boundary.
The San Andreas Fault in California.
Stress
A force on an object - causes deformation.
Deformation
The process by which the shape of a rock changes because of stress.
Compression
They type of stress that occurs when an object is squeezed, such as when two tectonic plates collide.
Tension
Tension is stress that occurs when forces act to stretch an object, or pull it.
Folding
The bending of rock layers because of stress in the Earth's crust.
Anticline
Most common fold; upward-arching folds. Caused by stress.
Syncline
Downward, troughlike folds caused by stress.
Monocline
When rock layers are folded so that both ends of the folds are horizontal.
Fault
A break in a body of rock along which one block slides relative to another.
Fault block
The blocks of crust on each side of the fault.
Hanging Wall
A non-vertical wall that the tip is hanging.
Foot Wall
A non-vertical wall which is sloping upward.
Normal Fault
??
Reverse Fault
Caused by compression, hanging wall moves up relative to the footwall.
Strike-Slip Fault
Caused by lateral movement of plates alongside eachother.
