Water passes into a plant through these.
Root hairs
Water is essential for this.
Photosynthesis
Plants transport water in these vessels or tube structures.
Xylem
Name 3 ways water is transported up a plant or tree.
Root pressure, capillarity and transpiration.
What is root pressure?
When roots draw in water from the soil and creates pressure.
What is capillarity?
When water clings up the side of tiny tubes.
What is transpiration?
When water evaporates from leaves and draws up more water inside the plant or tree behind it.
What are the tubes called that transport sugars to the rest of the plant or tree?
Phloem vessels.
Name the 5 regions of a leaf.
Cuticle, epidermis, palisade, veins and gas exchange.
What does the cuticle do?
It's a coating on the leaf that prevents moisture loss.
What does the epidermis do?
Protects the plant cells below.
What does the palisade do?
It contains the chloroplasts that make food from sunlight.
What do the veins do?
The veins are made of xylem and phloem and transports water and food to and from the leaf.
What gases are exchanged inside a leaf?
Carbon Dioxide in and oxygen out.
What are the leaf openings called?
Stomata.
What opens and closes the stomata?
Guard cells.
