What are the three types of semi-automatic actions?
1. Blowback operated
2. Recoil
3. Gas
How does a Blowback action work?
The action is not mechanically locked, and the weight of a heavy slide, plus a strong recoil spring is all that keeps the action closed.
What happens upon firing?
The chamber pressure created by cartridge ignition pushes the slide rearward, compressing the recoil spring.
What exactly keeps the action closed?
The inertia of the slide aided by spring resistance.
Blowback designs are generally restricted to which type of pistols?
Those firing low powered cartridges such as:
.22 LR, .25ACP .32 ACP and .380 auto.
How does Recoil action work?
When the action is closed, the barrel is locked to the slide.
What happens upon firing?
The barrel and slide recoil rearward together for a distance before the barrel unlocks and allows the slide to travel further rearward to complete the cycle.
What type of pistols employ recoil actions?
Most self loading pistols with cartridges of the power of the 9mm Para or greater use this action.
How does gas operated action work?
High pressure propellent, gas is bled from the bore through a small hole in the barrel.
This will exert pressure on a piston or other component, driving it rearward to unlock the breech and work the action.
Most semi-automatic firearms utilize detachable box magazines. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE.
What are some advantages of box magazines?
Rapid reloading
Large number of rounds can be fired in succession without reloading.
What component usually houses the cartridges?
A steel, aluminum or plastic body.
What is the floorplate?
This is the floor of the magazine box. It can be removed to allow cleaning of the magazine.
What is the function of the spring and follower?
They help push the cartridges in the magazine upward into position for reliable feeding.
What is a disconnector mechanism found in some semi automatic pistols?
These require that the trigger be released and then repressed each time a shot is fired. This prevents the machine-gunning potential.
What do single action semi automtics require?
The hammer to be cocked manually for the first shot. The reciprocating slide cocks the hammer for all subsequent shots.
What does double action employ?
The first shot is fired with the hammer down in the double action mode, a long relatively long trigger pull both cocks and releases the hammer, and all following shots are fired in the single action mode.
In semi-automatic safety mechanisms, the most familiar are the pivoting thumb levers located on the frame or slide. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE. Some may located bilaterally for for ambidexterity.
Safeties mounted on the frame typically block what?
The sear. Those mounted on the slide usually prevent the hammer from contacting the firing pin.
In cycle of operation, what is meant by 'in battery'?
In the locking step, with blowback designs, no locking occurs. The momentum of the forward moving bolt or slide is sufficient to fully chamber a cartridge an close the action. Thaction at this point, is said to be in attery.
Regarding semi-automatic cycle of operation, simply name the steps in the cycle.
