How much water is reabsorbed in the body per day?
9L
How much water is reabsorbed in the small intestine per day? Max?
7L/day
2x max
How much water is reabsorbed in the large intestine per day? Max?
2L/day
2x max
What are the two types of cell connections in the cells of the small intestine and large intestine?
Small intestine & proximal renal tubule:
LEAKY, isotonic absorbate

Colon & distal renal tubule:
TIGHT, hypertonic absorbate
What are two causes of water secretion into the crypt space?
VIP --> ^cAMP --> ^[Ca] in --> activation of Cl- channel on the apical membrane --> lumen becomes negative --> diarrhea

Cholera toxin --> bind to basolateral receptor --> ^adenylyl cyclate --> ^cAMP --> diarrhea
What are 3 types of diarrhea?
1. Increased osmotic load - increased water retention in the lumen. ie lactose intolerance, Mg containing antacids, inflammatory bowel disease

2. Excessive secretion of electrolytes "secretory diarrhea". ie cholera toxin, VIPoma, bile salt malabsorption.

3. Altered intestinal motility - rapid transit of the colon. ie IBS, diabetic neuropathy
