What is a System? |
A word used to describe a single object or a group of objects |
Conservation of energy |
Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transferred |
Kinetic Energy (with equation) |
Kinetic Energy is the energy stored of anything moving Ek = 0.5 x M x V2 M = Mass (kg) V = Velocity (m/s) Ek = kinetic energy ( J ) |
Gravitational Potential energy (with equation) |
Anything with gravitational potential energy is off the ground Ep = m x g x h Ep = gravitation potential energy ( J ) M = Mass (kg) G = gravitational field strength (N/kg) G = 9.8 H = height (m) |
Elastic potential energy (with equation) |
Anything that is stretched or squashed has elastic potential energy Ee = 0.5 x k x E2 Ee = elastic potential energy ( J ) K = spring constant (n/m) E = extension (m) |
Specific heat capacity (with equation) |
SHC is the amount of energy needed to increase a materials temperature by 1°C it's different for most materials E = m x c x ϴ E = energy increase ( J ) M = Mass (kg) C = specific heat capacity ( J/kg°C) ϴ = temperature change (°C) (To work out SHC do energy ÷ (Mxϴ) ) |
What is power (with equations) |
Power is the rate of energy transferred P = E ÷ T P = W ÷ T P = power (Watts) E = energy transferred ( J ) T = time (s) W = work done ( j ) |
What is conduction? |
Occurs in solids by transferring heat energy through vibrating particles around it |
What is convection? |
The transfer of thermal energy in liquids and gases through a convection current ( hot air/ liquid rises and the cooler substance replaced it getting heated and rising and sinking again when it cools in a cycle) |
What is efficiency (with equation) |
Efficiency is the amount of useful energy transferred compared to the total energy transferred (nothing is 100% efficient and the wasted energy is usually heat) Efficiency = useful output energy ÷ total input energy Multiply answer to get percentage |
Density (with equation) |
How much of something in a certain amount of space Density = mass ÷ volume Density = kg/m3 Mass = kg Volume = m3 |
What is latent heat (with equation) |
Latent heat is the amount of energy needed to change the state of an object Energy = Mass x latent heat Latent heat = energy ÷ mass Latent heat = j/kg Mass = kg Energy = j |
