What is a "force"?
A push or a pull on an object. Forces have size and direction
What is the SI unit for force?
Newton (N)
What do we mean by the term "net force"?
Force that results from combining all the forces acting on an object.
How do you find the net force if the forces are going in the same direction?
Add them
How do you find the net force if the forces are going in opposite directions?
Subtract them
What are "balanced forces"?
Occurs when the net force on an object is zero. The object does not move in any direction, because all of the forces are balanced.
What are "unbalanced forces"?
Occurs when the net force on an object is NOT zero. The object moves because one or more of the forces are greater than the others.
T/F: Unbalanced forces produce motion.
True
Name 5 relative directional terms
to the right, forward, backward, to the left, upward, downward
What is weight?
the measure of how much gravity is pulling an object
What is gravity?
a force of attraction between two objects that is there just because there is matter there.
What is friction?
a force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching
Name 4 types of friction
Sliding, rolling, fluid, static
Name 3 ways to reduce friction
-Using Lubricant
-Making the surface smoother -Use wheels |
Name 2 ways to increase friction
-Switch from rolling to sliding
-Make the surface rough |
What is motion?
When an object changes its position over time
Speed=
Distance/Time
Distance=
Speed X Time
Time=
Distance/Speed
What is "velocity"?
The speed of an object in a particular direction
What is acceleration?
a change in velocity-either speed or direction,or both
