Step 1 of Physical Exam:

General Appearance / Initial Observations Includes:
- General Appearance / Observations (how animal walks in exam room, foul smelling breath)
- Symmetry/Asymmetry (lameness / arthritis on one side, increased muscle structure in front legs)
- Mentation/Level of Consciousness-attentiveness/reaction to environment-Can ask owner: Is behavior typical for the environment? (BAR, QAR)
*Goal = hone in on exam (checklist)
Step 2 of Physical Exam:

Signalment / History includes:
Signalment:
- Age
- Breed
- Sex
- Reproductive status (Spayed/Neutered, In-tact)
- When was the last heat cycle? (If Female isn't spayed)
- Confirm signalment
History:
- Recorded in Subjective portion of chart
- Should have a directional flow
- Ask strategic questions / open-ended questions (not yes / no questions)
- Professional & personable
