What is a Pixel?
Pixels are the basic bulding blocks of a digital photograph. They are square and can be any color.
A Ratser Image and a Bitmap Image are an example of what?
A bitmap and a raster are examples of digital files made of pixels.
In Photoshop what is a selection and how does it appear?
A selection is a defined portion of an image. It appears as a line of "marching ants."
What happens when you select and area?
With an area selected, any edits, filter or effects you do will only happen to pixels inside the selcted area.
What does feathering a selection do?
Feathering a selection gives the selection a soft or gradual edge instead of a hard line.
How can you feather a selection?
You can feather a selection by using soft brushes in a quick mask or through the menus by going SELECT >FEATHER
What cursor tools in Photoshop help you make a selection?
Marquee, Laso, Magic Wand.
How can you edit or fine tune a selection?
Using selection tools. Hold Down shift to add selction areas or option to remove areas from selection, and/or use the quick mask (Q) feature to view selection as a color mask that can be edited with paintbrushes. Also by SELECT > TRANSFORM SELECTION
What does the Paint Brush tool do?
The Paint Brush tool allows you to paint a solid color, you can define the brush's size, edge hardness (how feathered the edge of the brush is) opacity (how opaque or transparent the paint is) and flow (how wet the brush is)
What does the Clone Stamp tool do and how does the Healing Brush tool differ?
Clone Stamp copys exatly form A to B. The Healing Brush tool uses math to blend what around it.
What use does the History palate provide? Are its contents saved with the file for future reference?
The History provides a list of the last 20 or so actions taken on a photgraph. Also it allows you to step backwards and undo. They are not saved with the file and will be forgoten when you close the image.
What are Layers?
Layers are like acetate sheets stacked vertically on top of a background images . Layers are opaque and they contain imagery and transparent when they dont.
What does a chekerboard pattern of grey and white squares denote in Photoshop?

What does a Layer's Opacity setting determine?
How transparent or opaque a Layer is.
Whats a Layer Mask?
A Layer Mask is like a carboard cut out that allows part of a layer to be hidden. Painting black on layer hides the corresponding part of the layer. Painting white reveals the corresponding part of the layer and grey denotes some level of semitransparency.
How can you edit a layer mask?
You can select the mask and use your paint brushes to paint white or black over parts of the image. Or you can press the backslash key (/) to see a color overlay of the mask and then edit using your paintbrush.
What is a layer set?
Its a folder that can contain multiple layers and in effect group them together.
What is an Adjustment Layer?
It is a particular effect that is loaded onto it's own layer so that it can later be edited, duplicated or discarded.
What is a Histogram
Its a graph of the detail of an image from shadow to highlight.
What does a layer adjustment do?
It allows you to modify the black, white and mid-tone of the histogram.
How many levels of black and white are in a photo?
There are 256 levels of B/W in a photo Black being a 0.
What does a Curves layer adjustment do?
It allows you to plot the density point of an image on a bell curve. The steeper the curve the more contrat you give the image.
What does the Blending mode do?
A layers Blending mode defines how it changes or blends with the layers underneath it.
What is the preferred file formet for saving images with all layers and masks? What is the 3 letter extention?
Photoshop format (.psd)
What is a Lossy file format? What is one example of a lossy format?
It is a format the compresses the image and throws away image data every time it is saved. JPG is the most common lossy format.
If you want to make a photo quality 8x10 print what resolution should your file be in at in pixels per inch or PPI?
72 PPI
What is Resolution?
Resolution or PPI goes hand in hand with image size. You can make a print larger by reducing resolution (therefore sacrifising image quality due to larger pixels) or you can make a more detailed print with a higher resolution by making the print smaller.
What are the attributes of color?
Hue, Saturation, Lightness
What does Hue refer to?
Hue refers to the color itself is it red, pink, aqua etc.
What does Saturation refer to?
Saturation refer to how pure the color is it school house red vs maroon.
What does lightness refer to?
Lightenss refers to the light of a color how dark is green.
What are the primary colors of light? What is the primary sytem called?
Red, Green, Blue. The Additive system.
What are the primary colors when dealing with pigments or dyes?
Cyan, Magenta and Yellow
What is the system of primeray colors of pigments and dyes called?
The Subtractive sytem. It is the oposite color complement of R,G,B.

What is a gradient?
It is a gradual fade between two colors or densities.
How can you make a good color image into a good black and white photograph?
You can disaturate the picture. But use curves and levels to global and local corrections. You can burn and dodge to make parts of image more contrasty. And/Or you can use a Gradient Map and set it to B/W.
How can you colorize a black and white image?
First you need to change layer form normal to color. Go to Hue/Saturation and turn on colorize. Then on a blank layer change Blending Mode to Color and hand paint.
