Flooding

The phobic is exposed to the feared stimulus, an intense fear response is triggered.

The situation is maintained, the phobic cannot escape and the fear response continues. The phobic might show intense mental and physical distress.

Eventually the response becomes exhausted because the phobic cannot maintain that level of psychological fear.

The fear response becomes extinguished.

Systematic Desensitisation

The phobic creates a heirarchy of fear with the therapist. This is a list of increasing fearful situations, starting with one that the phobic can tolerate and ending with the one that would create the most intense fear.

Relaxation techniques are taught and when the phobic is completely relaxed and ready to move on, they do so.

When they are able to handle the most feared situation comfortably, the phobia is extinguished.
