Role Model
Someone who serves as an example; in sport, athletes who are looked up to.
Moral Responsibility
An obligation to do the right thing; a duty to behave in an ethically good manner; for example, the notion that elite athletes have a moral responsibility to be positive role models.
Trash Talking
Verbal chatter; trash talking is usually delivered during a game or practice, usually directed at an opponent for the purpose of gaining an advantage by attempting to make an opponent mentally weak or by mentally strengthening/motivating oneself.
Morally Callused
Having become hardened to doing the right thing; the consideration that the longer a person is in sport, the less regard he or she has for the adherence to moral values in the sporting environment.
Anti-Heroes
In the context of sport, participants who choose to be the antithesis of a role model.
Hazing
An activity expected of someone joining a group (or to maintain full status in a group) that humiliates, degrades, or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate.
Moral Character
The evaluation of the moral quality of a person based on his or her practice and demonstration of moral values, or lack thereof, such as honesty, fairness, and responsibility.
