Freedom with a certain facticity
For human freedom to be what it is we will not always meet succes. human life meets real resistances, we cant bring about every end we want for ourselves.
Freedom
core of conscious, always exercised in a way that comes up to obstacles.
resistence always situated into a plan you have for yourself. resistence doesnt limit freedom, but shows us how free we actually are, because we can freely generate plan to overcome resistances
Facticity
being for others, represents certain restrictions my choices come up against, have freedom to chose, but do not have freedom not to choose.
resistence doesnt limit freedom,
but shows us how free we actually are, because we can freely generate plan to overcome resistances
*freely generated plan, may fail, but failure has nothing to do with preventing or making us less free.
*only free conscious because life resists us-radically resisting world.
*freedom requires existsnce, God is nt free because his choices are not met with resistence.
Dan exists as a good person
he chooses to be agood person so that Dan exists as a good person. at any moment he can chose different, whatever we report to be is not a fixed identity.
Existence precedes essence
consciousness. entities that possess a being in themselves possess being. cannot say Dan is good, because Dan has a being for itself.
Being and nothingness
A. Reflecting (I am a good person) we are no longer this good person
B. reflected on (good person is B)
-->once we engage inreflection we are no longer this person we are reflecting on.
*every act of self reflection is always grounded in a split, project an image which captures me and places me in a box. when we reflect we chose to describe ourselves in this way. we chose to live a life in a particular way..penny pinching, etc.
-->consciousness is radical nothingness of being. I am nothing at all outside of the world I create for myself.
existence precedes essence
Consciousness---everything not consciou=essence precedes existence. in order to be anything at all I must create myself and chose who I want to be. what we make of ourselves must remain ahead of ourselve. must exist first before we lay claim to be anything. even in not making anything of ourselves (sitting n the couch all day) that is intself a creation, we have to chose, we have to create...we dont have an option not to.
freedom in facticity
Freedom is defined as carrying out a plan of action based on the outcomes that we have to overcome. Freedom is exercised as we attempt to overcome inevitable and frequent obstacles in our daily lives, which are in place due to our being for others. Human life meets real resistances that prevent us from brining about every end we want for ourselves. Freedom in facticity therefore explains the context in which our freedom exists and is exercised, where it meets resistance and obstacles. resistence doesnt limit freedom but shows us how free we actually are.
freedom
due to resistence there is freedom, only free conscious bc life exists within radically existing world.
resistence=meaning
chose to open a door, but it wont open before you try to open. carry out free choice, no meaning before you do this. freedom requires resistence, God is not free because his choices are not met with resistence.
conscious in bad faith
A consciousness in bad faith is a conscious which lives in denial of freedom, either overestimating the amount of freedom we have, and denying facticity (restrictions and being for others) or contending that we do not have as much freedom as we really do, and focusing too much on facticity.
focus too much on freedom, deny facticity
When a conscious focuses too much on freedom and denies facticity, it denies the freedoms of existence that it should respond to, and fails to account for the real life consequences of human situations. An example of a conscious in bad faith, focusing too much on freedom, would be buying an expensive item that one knows they cannot afford or pay off at a later time period. Another example of focusing too much on human freedom would be murdering someone without considering the consequences, or going too long without having the oil checked on your car, which could eventually cause the car to break down.
focus to much on facticity, deny freedom
When a conscious focuses too much on facticity and denies freedom it is reducing facts of our life and existence into a socio-political context and denying our freedom to transcend these facts. An example of a conscious in bad faith, denying freedom, would be stating “I have to go to class today” or “I have to get married and have a family at some point in my life.” These are assumptions about things we must do, but we are free to go to class each day, and we are free to marry or not to marry in our lifetime. We are not forced to do these things, but we chose to do so, which attest to human freedom
authentic conscious
A conscious in bad faith can deny both freedom and facticity, and when it does so it remains in a self deceptive space. To attain an authentic conscious, which is the opposite of a conscious in bad faith, it is essential to create a balance between freedom and facticity.
Elements of facticity/Existence
1)physical body
(obese person trying to run) even a body in itself is an obstacles, because our experiences are spatial because we have a body..culd not have an out of body experience
2) being for others
-I can transcend the other, making him a object for me
-I can allow myself to be transcended, making myself a object for the other.
2) being for others
expectations-reduce myself to expectations or completely ignore them and act a fool. must take responsibility for our dress
3)my past
past will show up as resistences/obstacles. we are always chossing for ourselves. options at my disposal will always be determined by scenarios/situations that went on before. decisions you made i nthe past (having a child) are decisons that you have to be accountable for 2 present. past is factical account of condition/experience....nationality, period of history born into.
why is bad faith doomed to failure?
denial of freedom=bad faith. denial of freedom is free. choice made over another descions, in order to deny freedom, must be free to do so. denial of freedom is choice I make.
-consciousness in bad faith knows that it is fooling itself, ,so its not really fooling itself. project I chose. requires freedom to deny freedom--->
doomed to failure-individual who is perceptual liar..project attempts to deny or invalidate freedom. chose to deny freedom, free to deny how free i am. project that implodes..self destructs. must be freedom in order to deny. a cup cannot deny freedom....
consciousness will implode-->unsustainable mode of consciousness.
in fashioning myself I fashion mankind
every time we make a choice for ourselves we make this choice because we believe it is the best option, for that particular individual the choice made is the always better of options available.
-implications of making a choice (marrying) is the best choice for every human being in my situation. in fashioning myself I create scenario/image that i think is the best for all makind. must be carful of the choices that i make, because in this choice there is the implication that everyone should act this way..lying...ethics.
the existentialists do not believe in passion
man is w/o no excuse. @ end of day all we have is the neccessity to chose. everything results from the choices. requires responsibility. cannot use passion as an excuse.
- “[Man is] condemned, because he did not create himself, yet is nevertheless at liberty, and from the moment that he is thrown into this world be is responsible for everything he does.” (353)
do not choose the things we were born into, neverless man is at liberty. no matter where we started we have to take responsibility anout what that starting point means for us. we can make anything depressing/energuzing/powerfulas we want it ot be. (girl in inner city-poor schools)
existentialism is a humanism
satre focuses on what is good about humanism. refocus on human being/subject. centrality on human subject.
-celabratory, rights/priveleges we shoul dhave access to because we are humans
what threatens humanis?
God.
human subjectivity vs God.
humanis-attempt to regain control of human reality from divine power. humans are who they are because we have created ourselves this way. gives humans back freedom. humans have freedom to create self and world. but we also have to be accountable for the world we have claimed to create.
humanism
radical freedom to create out of nothing. power to create in a limited way. end up as a biproduct of ourselves...no determing force able to undercut other freedom.
strucuralism
way of understanding human structures (economic, cultural, linguistic, social) that govern human existence, but ironically these structures are human created. (like capitalism/language) these structures take a life of their own, we are at their disposal as we are possibly created, controlled by these superstructures
-->humans are biproducts of these structures. structuralism: humans products of these structures and culture determines us.
existentialism
recapture free subjectivity
"how like human nature" not permissible to say this as an existentialist. (satre is critical of)
there is no such thing as human nature. to follow the celabratory trajectort of humans, conscousness/being for itself does not possess a nature/not unqiue to human being.
"the only nature humanity can prescribe to is the absence of one" there is nothing to define us by.
-->rids us of the excuse--ppl chose to create things, cannot blame on human nature. like blaming on some divine human plan. we dont have a human nature to explain what we do--also critical of GOd (does not exist) as an artisan (does not exist)
existentialism principle
i am responsible, radically 100% for the life im living" running in marathon-there are things in our life that we dont really get to chose (body type, economic status, schooling) human subjectivity is condemmed because of the factors that we have no control over, but at the same time we do have th eliberty to create ourselves within these situations.
man makes himself before choosing
man is a project which posses a subjective life. we are what we propse to be, not neccessarily what we wish to be. conscious decison (choice) prior to every conscious decision we engage in . we have already been in the process of making ourselves. **prior to every conscious decision we enage in, we have already been in the process of making oneself (like chossing a job-there have already been so many things that have influences us before we come to this point to go to medical school blah)...we're bombarded by decions/influenced over a lifetime. not really chossing to be influences actively making yourself who you are.
sartes fundamental project
we chose who we are before we make a consciou decision to do chose who we are. we make choices for ourselves that we dont even realize were making. we make ourselves before we even make a choice.
- “[What] we understand by wishing/willing is a conscious decision taken…after we have made ourselves what we are” (249)
