The Bibles teaches: functional holism or ontological holism?
functional holism but no ontological holism.
Supervenience
is a kind of dependency relationship. For example, mental states might depend on physical brain states.
emergent supervenience
If a property is emergently supervenient, then it is a completely new kind of property different form any supervenient (physical) property.
Structural supervenience
If a property is structurally supervenient, then it is a structural property that is constituted by the parts, properties, relations and events at the subvenient level. It is a new kind of property; it is a new pattern, a new configuration of subvenient entities.
Is Dualism a scientific theory?
Dualism is not a scientific theory but a descriptive report (a metaphysical theory). It is a postulate to explain scientific laws. Dualism cannot be replaced by Neuroscience. Churchland is wrong that it is a scientific theory.
Theory vs. Report
A theory is an attempt to explain a range of facts while a report is an explanation of the specific fact.
Argument against functionalism
(knowledge by acquaintance) Mary seems to know something new when she experiences red after already knowing all of the propositions about red.
Diagram of pain:
Inputs (pin sticks) in the middle [c-fiber firing] causes output (behavior desire soothing).
Realizer
is something that plays the role. Like a c-fyber firing.
Folk psychology
is the set of assumptions, constructs, and convictions that makes up the everyday language in which people discuss human psychology. Folk psychology embraces everyday concepts like “beliefs”, "desires”, “fear”, and “hope".
(mental terms get their meaning from their role they play in folk psychology). Is like phylogistic science, it's outdated.
For the dualist, is Meaning is primitive and language is definitive?
yes, Meaning is primitive and language is definitive.
Churchland goes on to say where he thinks we get our meaning for our terms:
. Inner Ostension: Child sees something red and things that are not red. Knowing the differences allows the child to become familiar with the meaning of a term.
-This is a kind of conceptual ability prior to language.
-Language is built out of meanings of the mind.
Philosophical behaviorism:
The meaning of mental terms resides in their operational definition (pain is shouting ouch and grimising, they are publicly accessible).
-The objection: this leaves out the role that first person experience plays.
-This view is prior to scientific theory and empirically verifiable testing.
Theoretical Network Thesis
Holist theory of meaning: the meaning of a term comes form its role in a theory from which it is a part. e.g. electron is what ever orbits a nucleus (definition based on its relationship). A theory will contain laws, and laws explain data according to the deductive nomological model of explanation.
Simple seeing:
direct awareness of an object and requires qualia.
