3 Steps to making a solute dissolve faster
Heat, Stir, Crush
What's the pH range for an Acid? What does it contain more H+ or OH-?
0-7, H+
What's the pH range for a Base?
What does it contain more H+ or OH-?
7-14, OH-
What's a Neutral pH?
What does it contain more H+ or OH-?
7, Equal H+ and OH-
What are the shape and volume characteristics of a solid? What type of pattern do you see in a solid? What type of particle motion do you see in a solid?
Solid: Definite Shape, Definite Volume
Solids form a matrix-a regular repeating pattern.
The particles in a solid vibrate (bounce up and down)
List the shape and volume characteristics of a liquid. What type of particle motion do you find in a liquid?
Liquids have no definite shape but a definite volume. The particles in a liquid slide.
List the shape and volume characteristics of a gas. What type of particle motion do you find in a gas?
Gasses have no definite shape or volume. The particles in a gas fly.
What is a control variable?
A control variable is the variable that you don't change in an experiment. These are the things that must remain the same in order for the test to be valid. Like how you time, how you test. etc.
What is an independent variable? Which axis does it go on when graphing?
This is the thing you are testing. Like in the paper airplane lab, you testing your airplane's design.

The independent var. goes on the X axis
What is a dependent variable? Which axis does it go on when graphing?
This is the thing your measuring to find a difference. Like in the pendulum lab you were measuring time for swings, in the airplane lab your measuring distance.

The dependent var. goes on the Y axis.
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work. Energy can neither be created or destroyed, it can simply change forms like chemical energy changing to heat and sound energy.
What type of reactions take in energy? Do they make the environment hotter or colder?
Endothermic reactions take in Energy, they make the surrounding environment cooler.
What type of reactions release energy? Do they make the environment hotter or colder?
Exothermic reactions release Energy, they make the surrounding environment hotter.
How many grams are in a kilogram? How many grams are in .75kg?
How many grams are in 4.75kg?
1000
750g
4750g
What do you call the phase change from liquid to solid? Is it Endothermic or Exothermic?
Freezing-Exothermic it gives off heat. For Water it's this occurs at 0 degrees Celsius.
What do you call the phase change from Solid to Liquid? Is it Endothermic or Exothermic?
Melting-it's Endothermic it makes the environment colder because it needs to pull in heat.
What do you call the phase change directly from Solid to Gas? Is it Endothermic or Exothermic?
Sublimation-it's Endothermic it makes the environment colder because it needs to pull in heat.
What do you call the phase change from liquid to gas? Is it Endothermic or Exothermic?
Vaporization-It's Endothermic making the environment colder
What do you call the phase change from gas to liquid? Is it Endothermic or Exothermic?
Condensation-it's Exothermic making the environment hotter.
Explain what volume is and the formula for finding it in a solid.
Volume is the amount of space an object has within it or the amount of space an object takes up. To find the volume of a solid you multiply the length x width x height.
Explain what weight is.
Weight is a measure of the amount of gravity's pull on an object's mass. For this reason, if you travel to the moon you weight will be less as there is less gravity, but your mass will stay the same.
Explain what mass is.
Mass is the amount of matter and object is made of. It does not change because of gravity.
Explain what a suspension is.
A suspension is a type of mixture in which part is large enough (dense enough) to settle out. Examples include Snow Globes, Orange Juice with pulp, Paint, anything that you need to shake in order to mix thoroughly because part of the mixture will settle.
Explain what a solvent is. What is the "Universal Solvent"?
A solvent is a substance that dissolves another substance. Water is the universal solvent, as hot water will dissolve many things like grease, fat, oil, etc.
Explain what a solute is.
A solute is the thing being dissolved by a solvent. Examples would include the sugar in your tea, the Kool-Aid mix in your drink, etc.
In which step of the scientific method do you draw a graph?
Analysis
What do you call a mixture that looks the same throughout?
Homogeneous
What do you call a mixture that looks different?
Heterogeneous
What's a Pivot?
A point around which other things rotate.
What's a pendulum?
A swing
What does displacement mean? How do you use it to find volume?
Moving

To find the volume of a solid, fill a container with a liquid and record the volume. Add the solid and find the difference in volumes.
What's a Force?
A push or a pull.
Explain what a Mixture is.
A Mixture is a physical combination of things that can be relatively easily undone. The things being combined keep their original properties.
Examples: The mixed up socks in a drawer, The toppings on a pizza, salt mixed in water.
Explain what a solution is.
A mixture involving liquids.
Explain what an alloy is.
A mixture of metals.
