Histamine:
A compound derived from an amino acid called histidine, stored in small granules in most body tissues & is released in response to allergic reactions and tissue damage from trauma or infection. Reacts w/ H1 receptors (H1 receptor antagonist).
When large amount of histamine are released:
1.Extensive arteriolar dilation
2.BP drops
3.Skin becomes flush/edematous
4.Urticaria
5.Constriction/spasm of bronchial tubes.
6.Dyspnea
7.Increased amounts of pulmonary & gastric secretions are released.
Rhinitis Medicamentosa
Drug-induced nasal congestion
Caution use of antihistamines in pts with?
DM, HTN, or ischemic heart disease. May also cause urinary retention & caution use in older men w/ enlarged prostate.
Cromolyn Sodium:
An antiinflammatory agent that inhibits the release of histamine & other inflammatory agents. Needs to be administered before stimulus activates histamine.
