nonmedical drug use. Any use that deviates from the approved medical or social patters within a culture.
Define compulsive drug use:
preoccumpation with use and procurement of a drug. Individual feels that the drug is needed to continue well being.
Define addiction:
behavioral pattern of compulsive drug use. Overwhelming involvement with the use of a drug. High tendency to relapse after withdrawal. Should imply extreme compulsive use and phychological dependence. Not just physiological.
Physiological dependence
altered physiological state as a result of chronic drug use.
Tolerance
more drug is needed to elicit the same response or a reduced response is elicited by the same dose. Could be brought about by pharmacokinetic or delivery issues. Also could be functional tolerance where response is not as great.
Acute tolerance
Rapid pharmacodynamic tolerance. Seen in alcohol use.
Reverse tolerance or sensitization
Intermittent exposure causes a progressive increase in the sensitivity to drugs.
Phychological dependence
individual feels that the effects of a drug or the conditions associated with its use are necessary to maintain an optimal state of well being.
Positive reinforcement
drug induces euphoria or other pleasurable effects
Negative reinforcement
drug terminates pain, anxiety or withdrawal distress
CNS stimulants receptors
(cocaine, amphetamine, methylphenidate, appetite suppressants) |
Block dopamine and NE reuptake transporter
Nicotine receptor
nicotinic acetycholine receptor
Cannabinoids (marijuna)
cannabinoid receptor. Use for glaucoma, emmetic effect of ehmo, and analgesic for M.S.
Psychedelic receptors (mescaline, LSD, psilocybin)
5-HT receptor
Arylcyclohexylamines receptor (PCP and ketamine)
sigma receptor
Inhalants receptor (MDMA- ecstacy)
Serotonin recepttor
Drug abuse treatments that cause drugs to have no consequence
Methadone and LAAM. Mu agonist. Also nicotin patches and such.
Drug abuse treatment that cause drugs effect to be blocked.
Naltrexone and buprenorphine (partial mu agonist that reduces craving)
Drug abuse treatment that causes drug to be a punishment
Disulfiram. Inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase that causes nausea and vomiting while drinking
