Define pharmacokinetics?
Pharmacokinetics is what the body does to the drug
Define Pharmacodynamics?
Phamacodynamics is what the drug does to the body.
Agonist and Antagonist?
If a drug fits into a receptor, the receptor will either respond or be blocked

A drug that stimulates a receptor is an AGONIST and it mimics the effect of the natural mediator

A drug that blocks the effect of the natural mediator is an ANTAGONIST - an antagonist will prevent the natural chemical from acting on the receptor
Pharmacology can be defined as?
the science of drugs used to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease
Explain the term bioavailability'
Bioavailability – Definition:
“the degree to which a drug or other substance becomes available to the target tissue after administration
Explain the term 'first past metabolism' and its significance to oral drug administration and oral overdose.
A phenomenon of drug metabolism whereby the concentration of a drug is greatly reduced before it reaches the systemic circulation
It is the fraction of lost drug during the process of absorption which is generally related to the liver and gut wall
Explain Therapeutic Threshold and Therapeutic Plateau
Threshold – The minimum plasma concentration of a drug to give a therapeutic effect
Explain Therapeutic Margin
The plasma concentration of a drug between the therapeutic level and toxic level
Maintenance Doses
Drugs with a short duration of effect may require small incremental doses to maintain a therapeutic plasma level
These are called maintenance doses
Half-Life
The rate a drug is removed from the body
