Catecholamine
Name used to describe several drugs that are chemically similar.
Epinephrine

Sympathetic agonist
Naturally occurring catecholamine. It is a potent a & B adrenergic stimulant. More potent in B.
Action of Epinephrine
Increases hear rate, cardiac contractile force, electrical activity in myocardium, systemic vascular resistance, bp & automaticity.
Time of action of epinephrine
Onset < 2 min (IV/ET)
Duration 5-10 min
When should you give epinephrine
*Cardiac arrest (asystole, v. fib, & Pulseless v. tach)
*Severe anaphylaxis
*Severe reactive airway disease
