39 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Irreversible condition resulting from use of antipsychotics, reserpine at high doses, MPTP
Drug induced parkinsons
Agent used in drug therapy of Parkinson's instead of Dopamine which has a low bioavailability and does not cross the BBB
L-dopa
This is combined with L-dopa, inhibits DOPA decarboxylase which allows lower effective doses of Ldopa and allows for fewer SEs (GI distress, postural hypotension, dyskinesias)
Carbidopa
Clinical response that may fluctuate in tx of Parkisnons
On-Off phenomenon
Antiparkinsons drug which increases intraocular pressure and is contraindicated in closed angle glaucoma
L-dopa
Ergot alkaloid that is a partial agonist at D2 receptors in the brain, used for patients who are refractory or cannot tolerate levodopa, causes erythromelalgia
Bromocriptine
Nonergot agents used as first line therapy in the initial management of Parkinson's
Pramipexole
Ropinirole
Enhances dopaminergic neurotransmission SEs inlcude CNS excitation, acute toxic psychosis and livedo reticularis
Amantadine
Inhibitor of MAO-b which slows down metabolism of dopamine, used adjunct to levodopa or as sole agent in newly diagnosed patients
Selegiline
Inhibitors of COMT used as adjuncts in Parkinson's Dz and cause acute hepatic failure (monitor LFTs)
Tolcapone
Agent decreases the excitatory actions of cholinergic neurons. May improve tremor and rigidity but have LITTLE effect on bradykinesia. Atropine-like SEs
Benzotropine
Agent effective in physiologic and essential tremor
Propranolol
Agent used in Huntington's Dz
Tetrabeazine (amine depleting drug),

Reserpine
Agent used in Tourette's dx
Haloperidol
Pimozide
Clonidine
Chelating agent used in Wilson's Disease
Penicillamine
signs of Parkinson's

Dopamine receptor subtype targeted in Parkinsons
D2
Apomorphine function in Parkinsons?
can reduce off times

COMTs DOC for reducing fluctuations
Common SEs for Levodopa

Emesis (D2)
Hypotension (D1)
Decreased Prolactin
Levodopa is contraindicated in patients which a history of ______
psychosis
Drug causing Erythomelalgia and Pulmonary infiltrates
Bromocriptine

erythromelalgia is red tender swelling, usually of feet
D3 receptor agonist administered 3x daily, must monitor renal function

contraindicated in?
Pramipexole

PUD
Psychotic illness
recent MI
D2 receptor agonist used to smooth out fluctuations

reduced clearance with coadministration with caffeine/warafin
Ropinirole
rapid treatment of off periods

requires 3d pretreatment of antiemetics
apomorphine
drugs to be avoided with use of Selegiline
Meperidine
SSRIs
Why does selegiline cause insomnia
metabolized to amphetamines
Parkinson's drug causing orange urine
Entacapone
Tolcapone
Toxic effect of Amantadine
Livedo Reticularis (net-like skin rash)
Benzotropine/Trihexyphenidyl have no effects on
bradykinesia
ß blocker used for tremor with concomitant pulmonary disease

DOC RLS
Ropinirole
possible dopamine effects on eye
mydriasis and triggering an attack of acute glaucoma
Drugs ameliorative of Huntington's symptoms
Haloperidol (blocks dopaminergic receptors)
Tetrabenazine (depletes dopamine)
DOC to prevent toxicity of MPTP
Selegiline
