Chlorothiazide (Diuril)
Antihypertensive, agent for reducing edema-Thiazide diuretic
*excess loss of water/electrolytes
*thirst, weakness. lethargy, muscle cramping, hypotension, and tachycardia
*pt taking digoxion should be monitor for hypokalemia
*increase potassium intake
Contraindications:
*anuria,hypokalemia, severe hepatic or renal impairment, and hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
Interactions:
*addictive effects
*insulin less effective
*cholestyramine and colestipal decrease the absorption
LAB:
*may increase serum amylase and SBP retention
*may decrease protein-bound iodine and interfere with urine steroid
FOOD:
*absorption increased when taken with food
*licorice and aloe may worsen hypokalemia
*ginko biloba may increase blood pressure
