  • Front
  • Back
- Indications: Severe pain, Pulmonary Edema, and pain associated with MI
- Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS; alters the perception and response to painful stimuli while producing CNS depression
- Schedule II; Pregnancy Cat C
Morphine
- CI: hypersensitivity and known alcohol intolerance; cautious if use if: head trauma, geriatrics, OB, peds, MAOIs, ETOH
- AR: respiratory depression, confusion, sedation, hypotension, constipation
- Patient teaching: Tell family not to give to sleeping pt.
Morphine
- CI: hypersensitivity, known ETOH tolerance, pregnancy
- AR: confusion, sedation, hypotension, constipation
- Schedule 2, Pregnancy Cat C
Methadone
- Severe pain, suppresses withdrawal symptoms in opioid detoxification
- Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS; alters perception and response to painful stimuli while producing CNS depression, decreases severity of pain
Methadone
- Moderate or severe pain (alone or with nonopioid); anesthesia adjunct, analgesic during labor; pre-op sedation, rigors
- Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS; alters the perception and response to painful stimuli while producing generalized CNS depression
Demerol (Meperidine)
- CI: hypersensitivity, pregnancy/lactation, recent MAO therapy
- AR: seizures, constipation, sedation, hypotension, N/V
Demerol (Meperidine)
- Antidote
- Reversal of CNS depression and respiratory depression because of suspected opioid OD
- Completely blocks the effects of opioids, including CNS and respiratory depression, without producing any agonist effects
Narcan
- CI: hypersensitivity
- AR: hypertension/hypotension, ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, N/V
Narcan
- Moderate to severe pain, analgesic during labor, sedation before surgery, and supplement to balance anesthesia (Mixed agonist/antagonist)
- Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS, alters the perception and response to painful stimuli while producing generalized CNS depression
Nalbuphine
- CI: hypersensitivity, If given to patients addicted to opioids, may produce ACUTE WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME
- AR: dizziness, headache, sedation, dry mouth, N/V, clammy feeling, sweating
Nalbuphine (Nubain)
- Moderate to severe chronic pain needed continuously for an extended time period; not recommended for post-op, mild, or intermittent pain
- Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS, altering the response to and perception of pain
Fentanyl
- CI: hypersensitivity, known intolerance, OB/Geri/Peds
- AR:apnea, confusion, sedation, weakness, anorexia, sweating
- Patch worn; children may die from wearing the wrong patch
Duragesic (Fentanyl)
- Moderate to moderately severe pain
- CI: hypersensitivity, acute-severe sedation with alcohol, OB
- AR: seizure, dizziness, drowsiness, HA, somnolence, constipation, N/V
Ultram (Tramadol)
ASA o MI/TIA Prevention
81-325 mg/day
ASA OA/RA
2-6g/day
ASA Pain/Fever
325-650mg/day
ASA Rheumatic Fever
5-8g/day
- Moderate to severe chronic pain needed continuously for an extended time period; not recommended for post-op, mild, or intermittent pain
- Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS, altering the response to and perception of pain
Fentanyl
- CI: hypersensitivity, known intolerance, OB/Geri/Peds
- AR:apnea, confusion, sedation, weakness, anorexia, sweating
- Patch worn; children may die from wearing the wrong patch
Duragesic (Fentanyl)
- Moderate to moderately severe pain
- CI: hypersensitivity, acute-severe sedation with alcohol, OB
- AR: seizure, dizziness, drowsiness, HA, somnolence, constipation, N/V
Ultram (Tramadol)
- Inflammatory disorders: RA, OA, mild to moderate pain (may be combined with oral opiod), fever, prophylaxis of TIA attacks and MI prevention; anti-inflammatory; antipyretic; antiplatelet; (low dose cardioprotective)
ASA
- Produces analgesia and reduce inflammation and fever by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins; aspirin decreases plately aggregation
ASA
- CI: hypersensitivity, bleeding disorders, children with viral infections (Reye’s syndrome)
- AR: GI bleeding exfollative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, anaphylaxis, laryngeal, dyspepsia, epigastric distress, heartburn, nausea

ASA o MI/TIA Prevention
81-325 mg/day
ASA OA/RA
2-6g/day
ASA Pain/Fever
325-650mg/day
ASA Rheumatic Fever
5-8g/day
ASA TIA
1300MG/DAY
- Mild to moderate pain or dysmenorrheal; inflammatory disorders (RA & OA); lowering of fever
- Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
- CI: hypersensitive, active GI bleeding
Advil (Ibuprofen)
- AR: GI bleeding, hepatitis, exfollative dermatitis, stevens-johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, allergic rxns, HA, constipation, dyspepsia, N/V
Advil
- Mild pain, fever (NOT USED FOR ANTI-INFLAMMATORY)
