Becaue of the Liver Pathology Erythromycin can cause, what information must you obtain from the patient?
Obtain alcohol history

Ask about abdominal pain, yellow discoloration of skin or eyes, darkened urine, pale stools
When pt. going home, what foods/drugs do you tell the patient to avoid taking concurrently with Tetracycline?
Binds w/ Calcium*, iron, mag, aluminum, and zinc

Avoid - calcium containing foods and drugs (milk and Tums)

Avoid iron containing supplements - vitamins

Avoid antacids and laxatives

2 hours before and 2 hours after-- Take with water, don’t take with milk or dairy foods with calcium!
Why is tetracycline avoided in children?
Binds to calcium in teeth - permanently staining them yellow-- Because children’s teeth are growing, if you take liquid without a straw, it will turn them brown, permenantly!
What other concerns are there for patients who are receiving tetra and working outdoors
