What are the disease of the peripheral nervous system?
inflammatory
degenerative
metabolic
toxic
neoplastic
What is coonhound parlysis?
an inflammatory disease that results in acute ascending parlysis in dogs

lesion is demyelination and influx of inflammatory cells

occurs after the scratch or bite from a raccoon

reported in dogs and rarely in cars with no history of contact with raccoons and is called acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis
What are the signs of coonhound paralysis?
hyperesthesia, weakness, ataxia, leading to tetra paresis that can last for weeks or months

recovery is common but can take a long time

affected dogs develop extensive dennervation atrophy
What is Neuritis of the cauda equina?
tail and sphincter paralysis in the horse that results from chronic inflammation of the extradural portions of the nerve roots of the cauda equina

can also affect lumbar ad other nerve roots

The etiology is unknown

lesions are thickened nerve roots die to moderate to severe inflammatory cell infiltration (lymphocytic)
What are the signs of neuritis of the cauda equina?
perineal paresthesia-anesthesia, urinary incontinence, fecal retention, tail paralysis, croup muscle atrophy and hind limb ataxia weakness
What are examples of traumatic conditions that affect peripheral nerves?
avulsion of the brachial plexus in dogs

Amputation neuromas (tail dock neuroma in dogs)
sequel of neurectoma of digital nerve in horses
What is calving paralysis?
bilateral compressive damage of the obturator nerves

complication of dystocia in heifers with oversized fetuses

animals are unable to adduct their muscles and can affect the sciatic nerve

Animals are splay leg
What is diabetic neuropathy?
seen in cats

nerves are affected

Hind limb weakness with characteristic plantigrate stance, muscle wasting and proprioceptive abnormalities

Often associated with amyloid deposition in the pancreatic islets
T/F

Lead, thallium and mercury are not possible results of peripheral neuropathies
False
What is Vincristine neuropathy?
Vincristine sulfate made from an alkaloid plant Vinca rosea that has antineoplatic properties and is used in human and veterinary oncology to treat tumors

see peripheral neuropathy however it is reversible and an accepted sequel to therapy

causes neurotubule breakdown which leads to impaired axonal transport and axonal degeneration
What are examples of primary tumors that affect the PNS?
ganlioneuromas
ganglioneuroblastomas
peripheral nerve sheath tumores
What is an example of secondary tumors that affect the PNS?
rare
Marek's disease
What is Merek's disease?
Gallid Herpes Virus

induces lymphoma in chickens which can involve the viscera, eyes, CNS and PNS. Spinal lymphosarcoma in cats and cattle can occasionally involve spinal nerve roots
