PERFECT TENSE WITH AVOIR.

To form the perfect tense, you use an auxiliary and a past participle. Most verbs use avoir as the auxiliary.

j'ai

tu as

il/elle/on a

nous avons

vous avez

ils/ells ont.

FORMING THE PAST PARTICIPLE.

You form the past participle of regular -er -ir and -re verbs.

er turns to e.

ir turns to i.

re turns to u.

IRREGULAR PAST PARTICIPLES.

boire ( to drink) = bu.

faire ( to do/make) = fait.

ecrire ( to write) = ecrit.

lire ( to read) = lu.

prendre ( to take) = pris.

recevoir ( to receive) = recu.

voir ( to see) = vu.

NEGATIVE PERFECT TENSE.

In the perfect tense, the negative makes a sandwich around the auxiliary.

Je n'ai pas ecoute le CD.

Ils n'ont rien fait.

PERFECT TENSE WITH ETRE.

You take the auxiliary (etre) and the past participle.

The parts of etre are:

Je suis.

Tu es.

Il/Elle/On est.

Nous sommes.

Vous etes.

Ils/Elles sont.

PAST PARTICIPLE AGREEMENT

With etre you must make the past participle of verbs agree with the subject of the sentence.

Add -e if the subject is feminine singular: elle est arrive.

Add -s if the subject is masculine plural: ils sont sortis.

Add -es if the subject is feminine plural: elles sont.
