What are some initial interventions to treat fever in children?
•Light loose clothes
•Expose skin for cooling
•use a cool compress
What is one drug you should not give a child who has a fever?
Aspirin!

however it is acceptable for a child suffering from Kawasaki's disease.
What medication should be given to a child with fever?
Tylenol - 10-15mg/ kg

Ibuprofen - Only for > 6 mos old
every 6-8 hrs
< 39.1 - 5mg/kg
> 39.1 - 10mg/kg
What situations should an MD be immediately contacted in regards to a child with fever?
•fever in child less than 6 weeks old
•fever without cause for more than 24hrs
•fever for more than 3 days
•recurrent fevers
•child looks "toxic," very sick
What are some characteristics of Otitis Media?
-it has a rapid onset
-child experiences ear pain (otalgia)
-child will have a bulging red or yelow tympanic membrane
What are some characteristics of Otitis media with Effusion?
-there is fluid in teh middle ear space without symptoms of acute infection.
What age groups are more prone to getting Otitis Media?
• 80% of children < 1 yr old will get OE
• 50% of children < 3 years old will get OE

•After age 7, the prevalence of OE drops dramatically
What are some complications that occur as a result of Otitis Media?
•Cholestoma - this can lead to deafness due to puss and debris.
•Colisystoma - can lead to deafness or meningitis.
What is the pathophysiology of Otitis Media?
•it is caused by bacteria
•leads to impaired drainage from eustacian tubes

Often caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Haemophilus Influenzae or Moraxella Catarrhails
What are some risk factors associated with Otitis Media?
•Smoking in the household
•child's age
•formula feeding. Breast feeding can cut chances of getting OM
•Children in Day Care centers
How do you treat Acute Otitis Media?
• for children less than 6 months old
-Give Amoxicillin for 10-14 days

•for children older than 6 months old
-wait for 3 DAYS, may resolve self.
-if resolution doesn't occur then treat with Amoxicillan
-can also treat with Myringotomy for severe pain
When should Otitis Media with Effusion be treated?
It is not treated unless it persists for 3 months or more.
What are some surgical interventions used to treat recurrent Acute Otitis Media?
•tympanostomy tube
•Adenoidectomy
