What is another name for measles?
Rubeola
What are the SS of measles?
fever, maculo=papular rash,
koplick spots (white patches on oral mucosa)

Encephalopathy

Cause: virus (swells salivary glands esp parotid gland)
COmplication: Orchitis (swell testicles), sterility
What is another name for Rubella? and what does this look like?
AKA German Measles
-SS: faint rash, blueberry muffin spots when exposed in utero (congenital rubella)
-Congenital can cause heart disease, hearing loss, neuro problems
(starts in face --> extremities)
What is diptheria? What do you see?
Corynebacterium Diptheria
-see pseudomembrane in back of throat, neck swelling
Tx: antitoxin & erythromycin + pen G
Tetanus: SS? exposure??
SS: lock jaw, severe muscle spasms
Expose: toxin from spores found in soil & enter wound (dirty wounds)
What are the stages of pertussis?
(whopping cough)
Catarrheal stage: looks like URI
Paroxysmal stage: severe coughing (coughing so hard to vomit or have no air left)
What is a complication of whooping cough in infants?
apnea (stop breathing) is biggest concern
-infants can show atypical dz or sudden death
How do you treat pertussis (whooping cough)?
treat w/macrolides
-azithro, erythro, clarithro
under 6 months: consider hospitalize
Roseola: another name? SS?
6th disease
SS: begins w/high fever (>103) for 3-7 days followed by rash
(rash starts on trunk & spread to face & extremities)
Erythema infectiosum: another name? organism?
5ths disease
Organism: Paravirus B19
-from exposed mother in 1st trimester
What does erythema infectiosum look like?
fiery red rash on cheeks (slapped cheek appearance)
-lacy maculopapular symmetric rash on extremities (looks like lacy sunburn)
What organism is MC cause of Croup?
Parainfluenza
What are SS and Treatment for Croup?
SS: barky cough, stridor (suck in noise), hoarse voice
-accompanied by sore throat & ear infections
Dx: see steeple sign on xray
Tx: decadron
What is the adenovirus Triad?
pharyngitis, conjunctivitis & fever
What is source of botulism? SS?
source: home-canning, honey is common source in infants
SS: weak cry/suck, defect in CN's-usu starts in face
-then descends--symmetrical weakness
What is the fever work up?
fever is anything >100.4
-< 28 days old: get blood & urine culture, spinal tap (CSF), UA
What is the most common organism for fever if there is a blood infection?
Group B strep
What do you suspect if child has a fever w/unknown cause? and what is the best test?
Suspect UTI
best test is catheter if child is not potty trained
What are SS of MRSA? What is first line treatment?
SS: repeated abscess (MC)
-cellulitis, folliculitis
TX: Bactrim
