what is the most common viral rash in children?
enteroviruese ( include coxsackie, echovirus, polio and picorno) often times nonspecific febrile illnesses (respiratory, GI, aseptic meningitis)
hand foot and mouth disease
caused by coxsackie ( fever, malaise, sore throat, malaise) oral lesions begin as vesicles with an erythematous base, very painful-- palm/sole but also found on the dorsum of the feet/hands and buttocks
herpangina
similar to hand foot and mouth disease (fever, mouth pain, oral ulcers) also caused by coxsackie-- no hand/foot involvement
measles
rash starts behind the ears and hairline of the forehead, spreads in a centrifugal pattern central--> peripheral from head to feet
koplik spots
measles, bluish white lesions on the BUCCAL mucosa; treatment is supportive
rubella
german measles-- irregular pink macules and papules on the face, spread to tunk, arms in a centrifugal pattern
varicella
chickenpox-- VZV complications include encephalitis, pneumonia, hepatitis and bacterial superinfection with staph/strep
