Winter and early spring; rare in kids less than 1 year, peak in 3-10 years

Why is mono pharyngitis commonly mistaken with mono pharyngitis? What are others that are mistaken as well?
|
because they're presenting symptoms of fever and exudative tonsillitis and/or pharyngitis, and palatal petechiae; adeno, EBV, coxsackie

What are the most common presenting symptoms of mono pharyngitis?
|
fever and lymphadenopathy; other accompanying symptoms include malaise, HSM, cervical lymphyadenopathy

When should you suspect mono pharyngitis?
|
When pharyngitis is present for longer than 10-14 days, or when abx have not caused convalescence in 48H
|

How do you treat EBV ifxn?
|
rest, hydration, analgesia for throat, and notify families fatigue maybe present for months; restrict excercise and contact sports for 1 month or until HSM resolves; usually symptoms will resolve in 1 month or so

What is a morbilliform drug reaction noted in pts with mono?
|
maculopapular rash 5-9 days after given amoxicillin or ampicillin; does not indicate PCN allergy

What is the definition of infectious mononucleosis?
|
triad of fever, LN and pharyngitis; MC cause is EBV
|

What are the most common microbes in peri-tonsillar abscess?
|
strep pyogenes, staph, anaerobes

What are presenting symptoms of a peritonsillar abscess?
|
severe unilateral sore throat, fever, "hot potato" muffled voice, drooling, saliva pooling, "trismus"

What does trismus separate peritonsillar abscess from? What is trismus?
|
- severe pharyngitis or tonsillitis; reflex spasm and irritation of the internal pterygoid muscle
- neck swelling, pain, ipsilateral ear pain, decrease PO intake, fatigue, irritability |
