Definition of cognitive impairment/intellectual disabilities may be based on:
Cultural/language and/or motor/sensory impairments.
IQ 70-75 or below (51-70 mild, below 50 is severe) AAMR definition |
AAMR definition
Based on supports needed rather than cognitive functioning.
Includes adaptive behavior, participation, social interactions, and roles and health. Originates before age 18. |
Developmental disability (def)
similar to MR, but goes up to age 22 and doesn't have IQ requirements on it.
Etiology of cognitive impairment/intellectual disability:
Over 350 etiologies
Pre, peri, or post-natal |
Environmental factors
MR may be due to poor environment- no toys, options, don't go outside, etc.
Environment limits their cognition. Malnutrition, teratogens, and poor physical environment. Mother's education predicts child disability more than the child's own environment. |
When is considered early intervention?
up to age 3
Are children with severe cognitive impairments likely to have more severe motor delays and impairments?
Yes
Information processing tests
don't include motor or language. Do they respond when a bell rings? Show baby an item and they'll focus on it for a while. Spend more time looking at it the first time they see it than they do the second time.
IQ tests
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale vs. Wechsler. Not helpful for kids with motor delays.
Testing adaptive behaviors
PEDI and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale. Can look at cognitive ability by looking at their adaptive ability.
