Gaseous Exchange

Definition:

The replenishment of oxygen in the blood and the removal of carbon dioxide.

Partial Pressure

Definition:

The pressure exerted by an individual gas when it exists within a mixture of gases.

Oxygen partial pressure

The partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli is higher than the partial pressure of oxygen in the capillary blood vessels. This is because oxygen has been removed from the blood by the working muscles.

Oxygen diffusion

The concentration is higher in the alveoli, therefore the oxygen diffuses into the blood where there is a lower concentration.

Carbon dioxide partial pressure

The partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood is higher than the partial pressure in the alveoli (the opposite to oxygen).

Carbon dioxide diffusion

Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli, because the concentration is higher in the blood

Carbon dioxide diffusion

Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli, because the concentration is higher in the blood

Alveoli structure

The structure of alveoli helps the diffusion of gas, this is because they are one cell thick so there is a short diffusion pathway. Alveoli also have a vast surface area and are surrounded by capillaries which make diffusion faster.
