Atrophy
decrease in the size of cells resulting in reduced tissue mass. caused by reduced use, insufficient nutrition decreased nurological or hormonal stimulation.
Hypertrophy
increase in the size of cells resulting in increased tissue mass. can be caused by excersize
Hyperplasia
increased number of cells resulting in an enlarged tisue mass. may be a compensatory mechanism.
Metaplasia
when one mature cell type is replaced by another mature cell type. Could be caused by a deficit in vitamin A or as an adaptive mechanism.
Dysplasia
tissue in which the cells very in size and shape. Large nuclei are recently present and the rate of mitosis is usually increased.
Neoplasia
new growth or tumor. benign or malignant
Anaplasia
undifferintiated cells with variable nuclei size and cell structure, and numerous mitotic figures. malignancy and basis for grading cancer.
