Acanthocyte ( spur cell)
Liver disease, abetalipoproteinemia ( states of cholesterol dysregulation). Acantho = spiny |
Basophilic stippling
Thalassemias, Anemia of chronic disease, Lead poisoning |
Bite cell
G6PD deficiency |
Elliptocyte
Hereditary elliptocytosis |
Macro-ovalocyte
Megaloblastic anemia (also hyper segmented PMNs), marrow failure. |
Ringed sideroblasts
Sideroblastic anemia. Excess iron in mitochondria = pathologic. |
Schitocyte, helmet cell
DIC, TTP/HUS, traumatic hemolysis (metal heart valve prosthesis) |
Sickle cell
Sickle cell anemia |
Spherocyte
Hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune hemolysis. |
Teardrop cell
Bone marrow infiltration (myelofibrosis) |
Target cell
HbC disease, Asplenia, Liver disease, Thalassemia |
Heinz Bodies
Seen in G6PD deficiency; Heinz body-like inclusions seen in alpha-thalasemia. Oxidationn of iron from ferrous to ferric form leads to denatured hemoglobin precipitation and damaged to RBC membrane- formation of bite cells. |
Howell-Jolly bodies
Seen in pt w functional hyposplenia or aspleni, or after mothball ingestion (naphthalene). Basophilic nuclear remmanents found in RBC. Howell-Jolly bodies are normally removed from RBC by splenic macrophages. |
