Chronic demyelination of CNS that results in scarring

S/sx MS
Vary due to which nerves are affected; need 2 separate episodes at different locations; vision changes; balance, memory, weakness, fatigue, spasticity, bladder dysfunction, tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait
Testing MS
hard to diagnose - MRI Demyelinating lesions in white matter; lumbar puncture Oligoclonal bands
What is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
Atrophy of upper and lower motor neurons
Causes ALS
idiopathic; genetic; possible excess glutamate
S/sx ALS
diminished muscle strength progresses to atrophy; weakness and spasms, difficulty speaking; fatigue; spastic and flaccid paralysis; respiratory infections; no intellectual or sensory impact
What is Myasthenia Gravis
chronic autoimmune disease; loss of acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junctions
S/Sx Myasthenia Gravis
Muscle weakness, fatigability; eyes first; progressive muscle weakness with activity; worse with stress, heat, or physical exercise; thymus tumors
