What is the passé composé?

The past tense in French that is made up of two component parts, an auxiliary verb and a past participle.

How is the passé composé formed?

With either avoir or être as the auxiliary verb in the present tense, plus a past participle.

When avoir is the auxiliary verb what is the rule for the past participle?

The past participle does not agree with the subject in number or gender.

Which verbs use être as their auxiliary verb?

20 intransitive verbs and all reflexive verbs.

What is an intransitive verb?

A verb that does not have a direct object.

When être is the auxiliary verb what is the rule for the past participle?

the past participle will agree with the subject in number and gender, and will use the same endings as when past participles are used as adjectives.

What is strange about the use of "vous"?

It can take either a singular or plural ending.

What is the exception for the 20 intransitive verbs that take être?

When they are being used in a transitive sense, they take avoir.

How are reflexive verbs in the passé composé formed?

With the subject pronoun, its corresponding reflexive pronoun, être in the present tense, and the past participle, which agrees with the subject.

What is the exception to this rule?

When a reflexive verb is sued with a direct object in addition to the reflexive pronoun, the past participle does not agree with the subject.

How is the passé composé typically translated?

Into the simple past.

If you are wanting to translate a verb that takes être into the compound past in English, what do you do?

Translate it as if it were avoir (Je suis venu in the compound past would be -- I have come, not I am came).

How is the negative formed in the passé composé?

"ne" precedes the auxiliary verb and "pas" follows immediately after the auxiliary verb (Je n'ai pas parlé).

What is the past participle for avoir?

eu (had)

What is the past participle for être?

été (been)

Which verb do avoir and être take as their auxiliary verb in the passé composé?

Avoir

What should you keep in mind when translating the passé composé with the imparfait?

To try the continuous, "I was doing" translation first.

Where are adverbs often placed when used to modify the verb in the passé composé?

Between the auxiliary verb and the past participle. (eg. Ils ont beaucoup aimé la nouvelle voiture = They really liked the new car)

How do you tell the difference between passé composé using être and a predicate adjective?

If the past participle is one of the 20 intransitive verbs or is a reflexive verb, it is passé composé and must be translated into the past tense. If it is not, then it is a predicate adjective and must be translated into the present tense.
