Baptism has clear promises attached to it

Ac 2:38 – Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

In accordance with God’s will and for the sake oforder, the church administers the sacraments through specially appointed(called) persons.

1 Co 14:40 – But everything should be done in afitting and orderly way.

The Bible clearly testifies to the importance of beingunited with God as his children and heirs through baptism.

Gal 3:26-27 – You are all sons of God through faithin Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ haveclothed yourselves with Christ.

Baptism also produces the sanctification that itsymbolizes.

Ro6:1-4 – What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace mayincrease? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it anylonger? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized intoChrist Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were thereforeburied with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ wasraised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a newlife.

The New Testament emphasizes that God desires childrento enter the kingdom of heaven, but mentions no way for them to enter it otherthan baptism.

Mk 10:14 – Let the little children come to me, anddo not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Scripture, however, ascribes sinfulness and guiltto infants.

Ps 51:5 – Surely I wassinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

The second element is identified in Scripture as“the fruit of the vine”.

1 Co 11:26-28 – Whenever you eat this bread anddrink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthymanner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks ofthe cup.

Paul’s words make it clear that the bread remainsin the sacramental meal along with the promised body of Christ.

1 Co 10:16 – Isnot the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in theblood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the bodyof Christ?
