What are the different areas of the brain?
Cerebrum, Diencephalon, Cerebellum, Brainstem
What are the different lobes of the cerebrum?
Frontal, Temporal, Parietal, Occipital
What is the function of the frontal lobe of the cerebrum?
Contains Primary Motor Area that allows us to consciously move our skeletal muscles
What is the function of the Temporal lobe of the cerebrum?
Has the auditory area responsible for hearing and the olfacotry are responsible for smell
What is the function of the Parietal lobe of the cerebrum?
It contains the somatic sensory area which allows us to recognize heat, cold, pain, and pressure
What is the function of the Occipital lobe of the cerebrum?
It contains the the visual area responsible for sight
What are the different parts of the diencephalon?
Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Epithalamus
What is the function of the Thalamus of the diencephalon?
It is the relay station for sensory impulses passing upward to the sensory cortex
What is the function of the Hypothalamus of the diencephalon?
It plays a role in regulation of body temperature, water balance, and metabolism; an important part of the autonomic nervous system

Also part of the limbic system "emotional visceral brain"- thirst , appetite, sex, pain, and pleasure

Contains mamillary bodies which are reflex centers involved in olfaction
What is the function of the Epithalamus of the diencephalon?
Contains pineal body and choroid plexuses
What is the function of the Cerebellum?
Provides precise timing skeletal muscle activitiy and controls our balance
What are the different parts of the Brainstem?
midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata
What is the function of the midbrain of the Brainstem?
Has two bulging fiber tracts, called cerebral peduncles which convery ascending and descending impulses.

In the back of it (dorsally) are four rounded protusions call corpora quadrigemina which are reflex centers for vision and hearing
What is the function of the pons of the Brainstem?
Mostly made of fiber tracts
What is the function of the medulla oblongata of the Brainstem?
Important fiber tract area; has many nuclei that regulate visceral activities It contains centers that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, swallowing, and vomiting
What is the reticular formation?
A mass of gray matter that extends the whole length of the brain stem. Neurons of reticular formation responsible for motor control of the visceral organs

RAS (Reticular activating system) plays a role in consciousness and the awake/sleep cycles.
What are the three layers of connective tissue that cover the brain?
Dura Mater (Inner Most), Arachnoid Mater (Middle) and the Pia Mater (Outter Most)
What do you call the two folds which the dura mater attaches to the cranial cavity?
Flax Cerebi, Tentorium cerebelli (separates cerbellum from cerebrum)
What is type of fluid is the subarachnoid space filled with?
(CSF) Cerebrospinal fluid
What bundle of capillaries form CSF?
choroid plexuses
What barrier is made up of the lest permeable capillaries in the body that keeps neurons separated form bloodborne substances?
blood brain barrier
What substances CAN get through the blood brain barrier?
Water, glucose, and essential amino acids (good)

fats, respiratory gases, other fat-soulble molecules (bad)
What substances CAN NOT get through the blood brain barrier?
Metabolic wastes such as urea, toxins, proteins and most drugs
