Adjective

A word or phrase that describes or modifies a noun. (Examples: bitter, solid, blue, gigantic)

Adverb

A word or phrase that modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. (Examples: gently, quite, then, there)

Conjunction

A word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause. (Examples: "FANBOYS" = for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)

Interjection

A word used to express a particular emotion or sentiment on the part of the speaker. (Examples: Ah! Hey! Ouch!)




Filled pauses (like "er" or "um") are also considered interjections.

Noun

Person, animal place, thing, or idea. (Examples: chair, cat, snow, shoe)

Preposition

A word used to express spatial, temporal, or other relationship. (Examples: in, on, by, around, since).

Pronoun

A word that takes the place of a noun. (Examples: I, he, you, someone, it)

Verb

A word used to describe an action or state of being. (Examples: hear, become, run, eat)

Subject

The person or thing doing the action in a sentence.

Predicate

The part of a sentence that contains the verb and everything that comes after the verb.

Action Verb

Describes the act or activity being done by the subject of a sentence. (Ex. jump, run, chew)

Helping Verb

Helps the main verb of a sentence by extending its meaning. (Ex. should, could, been)

Linking Verb

Links the subject to the verb. (Ex. am, was, appear)
