Nucleus |
control center for all activities and takes part and controls cell division. |
Nuclear membrane |
Thin double membrane that covers the nucleus and allows only certain substances to pass from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. |
Nucleoplasm |
A thick fluid substance on the inside of the nucleus to hold the nucleolus in place. |
Nucleolus |
Inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes and takes part in protein synthesis. |
Chromosome |
Granular material that is inside the nucleus and is made of genes. Controls the activities of the cell info on heredity, structure and function. |
Chromatin |
during reproduction chromatin shorten and thicken into rods called chromosomes |
What is DNA made of? |
deoxyribonucleic acid |
what is the cell membrane? |
the layer between the outside of the cell/cell wall and cytoplasm. It is made of protein and lipids, has two layers and pores. only allows certain substances to enter in and out of the cell. |
Cytoplasm |
Between the nucleus and the membrane and flows within the cell. It holds organelles in place. It is thick and made of water, gas and waste. |
Endoplasmic reticulem soomth |
It is a system of double membrane canals that lie parallel to one another. it fastens to the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane . Allows material to pass through the cytoplasm. NO RIBOSOMES! |
Endoplasmic reticulum rough |
It is a system of double membrane canals that lie parallel to one another. it fastens to the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane . Allows material to pass through the cytoplasm. HAS RIBOSOMES |
Ribosomes |
Attached to the Endoplasmic reticulum rough and is granular in appearance. It controls protein synthesis and has large amounts of ribonucleic acid and enzymes. |
Mitochondria |
organelle in the cytoplasm that uses O2 to make energy that supports all of the cell activities and helps control the amount of water in the cytoplasm. it is involved in a breakdown of sugars, fatty acids and amino acids. The layers contain protein and fat. 2 layers. |
Organelles |
parts of the cell in between the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane. |
Lysosome |
considered the "stomach of the cell", it digests proteins and large molecules. Contains enzymes that could destroy the cell if ruptured. simple, single membrane. |
golgi apparatus |
In the cytoplasm. looks like a stack of flattened sacs separated by membranes. Wraps up a large number of protein molecules into a single bundle and sends it to the cell membrane. |
Vacuole |
in plant cytoplasm, a very large organelle that is filled with fluids. A membrane controls the movement of molecules from vacuole into cell. may contain food or waste. |
Chloroplast |
In the cytoplasm of a plant and is filled with chlorophyll and pigment. It converts sun energy into carbohydra. |
Cell wall |
only part of plants. A layer on the outside of the cell membrane that protects and supports the plant it has two or threes layers. The primary wall is made of cellulose and protein. The middle lamella is jelly like. Only some plants have the secondary wall. Eg. wood |
What is the difference between animal and plant cells? |
Plant cells have vacuoles, cell walls and chloroplasts. |
