anthelmintics

de-wormers. Various mechanism of action, depending on the particular drug and its intended victim.

benzimidazoles

used to treat nematodes and trematodes. Limited efficacy against cestodes(Dipylidium species). Mebendazole, fenbendazole, febantel, oxfendazole, oxibendazole. Most commonly used brand in small animal medicine is Panacur

Imidazothiazoles

levamisole(pour-on, injectable, and oral). Most often used in large animal species as a dewormer for roundworms

Tetrahydropyrimidines

Pyrantel pamoate is effective against the common GI nematodes, except for whipworms. Many trade names as well as generic products. Nemex 2, Strongid-T, etc. Often used in combination with heartworm preventatives for control of intestinal nematodes. PLUS in heartgard Plus

Macrocyclic Lactones

avermectins and milbemycins. Some have efficacy against nematodes and ectoparasites, often used for heartworm prevention.

Ivermectin, milbemycin oxime, advantage multi

Avermectins

Ivermectin is used in dogs at only 6 mcg/kg body wt, PO, given at 1-mo intervals, to prevent development of Dirofilaria immitis, the cause of heartworm disease. To treat demodecosis, doses as high as 600 ug/kg are used. At higher dosages (>100 mcg/kg), some Collies and individual dogs of other breeds are adversely affected by ivermectin. This is possible with any dog, but know to occur in certain breeds. watch out for mixed breed dogs and oral ivermectin.

Praziquantel and epsoprantel

have high efficacy against cestode parasites at relatively low dose rates, but no effect on nematodes. Cestex, Droncit.

Immiticide

Melarsomine dihydrochloride. only produce on the market right now approved for treatment of adult heartworms in the dog. Not approved for cats.

Treatment for Coccidia

Coccidiostats. Albon(sulfadimethoxine). Antibiotic can be used to treat Coccidiosis. It does not kill the parasite, but interrupts their reproduction, allowing the host's body to clear the infection.
