Pain

"An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage.

Pain Management

The use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to control the patient's identified pain. This encompasses the patients quality of life, ability to work productively, to enjoy recreation, to function normally in the family and society, and to die with dignity.

Patient reports of pain

Completely subjective. Only the affected person can fully and deeply describe and evaluate. Far more accurate and reliable than other pain assessments.

Nociceptive Pain

Pain that occurs as a result of an injury, which with proper nervous system operation, sends a signal to the brain that an injury has occured.

Can be further categorized and classified as somatic and radicular.

Somatic pain

Pain originating from deep tissue injuries like those affecting the bones and muscles.

Radicular pain

Originates from the nerve roots of the spinal cord and travels down the legs.

Radiculopathy

Neuropathic pain

Occurs when the nervous system had been damaged and is not functioning in a normal manner. The source of this pain cannot be readily identified.
