Acute Pain

Acute pain has a predictable ending / healing and an identifiable cause.



Health care team usually treat aggressively.

Chronic Pain

Prolonged pain, varying in intensity - persisting over 3 months or longer.



Pain that continues after physical healing. The body's inability to prevent interpretation of pain signals and symptoms after injury has resolved.

Types of Pain

Somatic -originates in skin, muscle bone or connective tissue.



Visceral - internal organs and body cavities.



Neuropathic- originates in spinal cord.
