somatic - originates in body structure that isn't neurogenous.
-inflammation increases receptivity of neural structures, reduced central inhibitory control increases pain sensation.

Somatic pain categories?
1. superficial
2. deep pain

1. Superficial somatic pain: bright stiumlating quality, localized, faithful in incidence, intensity and location (ex. mucogingival, cutaneous- skin ulcers)
2. Deep - snesory innvervation of deepr stuc. of body suplies somatosensory complex. its more dull, depressing, non localized.
a. musculoskeletal - relates to biomech function, contraction, gradual response
b. visceral - no relation to function, not usually felt until the threshold is reached

Neuropathic pain

- no need to stimulate nerves but if you do, you'll get summation of pain and make it worse
-burning, hyperalgesia, dysesthesia, anesthesia

2. sudden cburst of elecic like pain that projects heterotropically

4. ongoing, unremitting, burning senstaion in peripheral dist. of affected nerve. assumed to be due to inflammatory process along course of nerve trunk.
