Transduction of Pain
conversion of painful stimuli to an electrical impulse
Transmission (of pain)
occurs as the electrical impulse travels along the nerve fibers and is regulated by neurotransmitters
Preception (of pain)
awarness of pain occurs in the brain and is influenced by thought abd emotional processes
Modulation (of pain)
occurs in the spinal cord, causing muscles to reflexively contract, moving the body away from the painful stimuli
Somatin (pain)
coming from bone, muscle, skin, or connective tissues.
Visceral (pain)
coming from internal organs (stomach/intestines) usually poorly localized. Can cause refered pain in other body locations not associated with the the stimulus.
Cutaneous (pain)
originates in the skin or subcutaneous tissue
