Indications for Use
Symptomatic bradycardia
Heart Block (2° or 3°AVB)
Prophylactically for BBB
Atrial overdrive to terminate Afib or flutter with RVR

 Uncomfortable due to muscle involvement, skin irritation & diaphoresis

 Wire inserted via jugular or subclavian vein
 Pacing occurs in right ventricle

 Palpate radial or carotid, BP
Patient and Family Guide
 Carry pacemaker ID card at all times
 Take pulse X 1 minutes, same time everyday, record
 Know the rate set for pacemaker
 No pressure to generator
 Inform HCP’s or pacer (MRI) prevent damage or affect pacer function
 Antitheft devices, airport security, metal detectors
 Take all meds as prescribed
Implantable Cardioverter/Defibrillator
 Patient and Family Guide (pg 761)
 Carry ID card at all times
 No constriction or pressure on generator
 No rough or strenuous activity
 Avoid magnets
 Sit or lie down immediately if dizzy or faint to prevent fall injury if ICD discharges.
 Have family members learn CPR.
 Report symptoms of dizziness, blackouts, rapid pulse, fainting to PCP.
